Small Town Brewery's Not Your Father's Root Beer Review | The Beer Life

Hey, you on YouTube! Matt with Massive Beer Reviews, back with yet another review, and yeah, it is root beer time in the form of Small Town Brewing, is their Not Your Father's Root Beer. Yeah, I've been wanting to try this for a while. It did not get distributed in my area. A friend of mine, Ryan, got it in a beer trade, and he's like, "Hey, I got a beer for you." And, lo and behold, two days later, it was available locally, so I grabbed it before he could even give me one. So, there you go, Ryan. So, fuck it.

Anyway, as far as what it says on the bottle, Small Town Brewery, "Small Town Brewery makes specialty beers that utilize unique ingredients with an unmistakable taste of nostalgia, Not Your Father's Root Beer Ale with taste of spices, 5.9% alcohol by volume version." I believe there's like a 10% or 11% alcohol by volume version floating out there. Can't wait to give that a whirl. And that's pretty much it. "Beer with natural vanilla extract, other natural and artificial flavors, and caramel color." So, yeah, label's all right. It's cool. It's going for a whole old-timey hipster vibe, which is, whatever, you know, Not Your Father's Root Beer. It is what it is. It's an okay label, just trying too hard, in my eyes.

So, let's see what this sucker has to offer. It smells like root beer, I can tell you that right now. Smells almost like a birch beer based off of what I can smell just from cracking it right now. I could be wrong. There was a head, and now it's gone. It was khaki in color, and what is left behind is straight-up soda. You know, it's probably what it's... you know, it's supposed to be root beer, so they're probably going for like a soda thing. Color-wise, it is pretty damn dark, just a hair under being black. You can glean a little bit of color from it, but not that much. So yeah, cool, I spilled that sucker everywhere.

So, let's see what she smells like. Yeah, huge, like I said, not even a Barq's root beer, or almost like, somewhere between a regular root beer and a birch beer. That's exactly what you get. Huge, huge brown caramel sugars, candied sugars, with like tons of spices, molasses, all the stuff you'd expect with sarsaparilla. You know what I mean? All the stuff that you'd expect to find in a regular root beer is just there in spades. Doesn't even smell like a beer, at all. Just a huge root beer flavor, like root beer barrel, that's exactly what it is, like that root beer barrel, those candies that you used to get when you were a kid that you used to cut the crap out of your mouth, and you'd bleed, but you'd keep eating them. At least, I know I did. I like sweets. Anyway, yeah, smells awesome. Looks like root beer. Let's see what she tastes like. Cheers.

Well, that's root beer. It's just like I'm drinking root beer, really. Very niche, not really beer. Well, a root beer, I guess you would say, so it is a beer. It just tastes exactly like root beer. A little bit less intense in the mouth than it is in the nose, but it's still very, very sweet. Probably in the cloying area for most people, but for me it stops just a scootch short because I like beers that are typically sweet. There's just a ton of spices in there. It's root beer. I don't have to run through exactly what the flavor is. If you've had root beer before, Barq's root beer, or root beer barrels, like I said, it's literally spot on, the same exact flavor as that. Same flavor, same mouth feel, same everything, it's just like that. It tastes like soda. It tastes like cola. It tastes like root beer. But it is beer, or alcoholic beer. It's weird to call it not-beer, even though it is a root beer.

Anyway, ratings-wise, weird one to rate. Even Mica agrees that it's kind of bizarre. Just because I like how it tastes, but it's extremely the definition of niche, so I don't even know what to rate it. I'm just going to rate it. I'm going to rate it as an 87. I like how it tastes, it's really cool, but I'm going to be hard-pressed to get through one of them, I think, based off of sweetness. If someone handed this to me and was like, "Hey, here's a root beer. You want a root beer?" Sure, I'd be fine with it, but I'm in a beer-drinking mode, this is probably a little bit too much for me to kind of throw down more than one. But it's a cool concept. So, yeah, it's a weird one to rate, in that I dig it, but it's kind of just bizarre, in that it's not a beer, even though it is a root beer, because it's root beer, not beer. But, anyway, I dig it. Rating-wise, I would give it an 87.

Availability, value... It's $14 for a six-pack. By me... Again, your mileage may vary, but by me, for something like this, I think what would be really cool to have at barbecues for people who want to have something beer-like, but are not into beer, I think it has really big possibilities for stuff like that, so I'd give it a value scale of like, six, seven. And availability, I mean, up until a couple days ago or a week ago, we couldn't get it in my area, but now I can pick it up in my little grocery store. So right now, I'm going to give it a seven. Probably going to be up there in the nine, tens, because it seems like it's going to be something that's going to be a big hit in this area.

So there you go, Not Your Father's Root Beer. If you like root beer, you'll like this beer. If you like soda, you'll like this beer. If you like the sweetest beers, as sweet as they can be, you'll like this beer. Yeah, not too shabby, very well executed for what they're trying to pull off.
